Why I Keep a Gratitude Journal
One of the first things that almost all successful people do is keep a Gratitude Journal. I had listened to Oprah talk about them for years but I never started one. The more I researched happy, positive, and successful people the more Gratitude came up.
I've had a Gratitude Journal for almost a year. I am going to share with you what it has done for me and how fast it changes my negative energy while I am writing and also when I go back to read them.
The first month really didn’t go so well. I made it a goal to write 3 things every day. I skipped days because I simply just forgot. Then I started making it a priority in my daily planning. I love checking thinks off things in my planner and Bullet Journal. It gives me a sense of accomplishment even the small things that take me 2 minutes to accomplish.
The first absolute truth to Gratitude is that you can’t be negative and nasty while you are thinking about the things in your life that you are thankful for. After the first month I could flip back through and read my entries and they would make me smile. They would bring up the positive feelings that I had written down but simply forgot.
The more I would write down my gratitude the more things would come up for me to be thankful for. At first I will admit I would just quickly jot down simple one or two words like my son, my health, and just waking up alive. But then I began looking about more things to be thankful for that I wanted to remember and I could reflect on in the future.
A couple of entries that I still love to flip back to are the months leading up to my son and I moving to Florida. They make me laugh and smile. One that still makes me laugh is an entry where I said,” I am completely broke and moving to Florida in a month, yay I am so excited and thankful!”
My most favorite entry is the morning that I watched the sun come up over the Ocean for the first time. I was so lucky to share that moment with my sister and my son. It was so beautiful and inspiring. Later in the morning my son and I walked along the beach with the waves kissing our feet. That was on July 5, 2017 and I love going back to read it and have all the feelings overwhelm me.
You don’t have to go out and buy an expensive journal or notebook to start. When I started mine I stapled printer paper together and kept it by my planner. Just use what you have!
So in closing I want to tell you that this is such an important step towards your new life. You have to acknowledge the things in your life that you are thankful for so that you truly appreciate what you have. I literally have entries that say, “I am thankful that I can afford tampons this month” and “I am thankful that I bought enough toilet paper last week because I don’t have the money to buy it this week.” Just try it and you will begin seeing the changes around you. Before you realize it you will begin searching out things in your everyday life to be grateful for.
